Dr. Schweitzer’s Hospital Fund

Established by Dr. Schweitzer in 1922 to support his work in Africa, and formally constituted in 1959 to “…support hospitals world-wide which are managed in the spirit of Albert Schweitzer…”, DSHF still takes a concerned interest in the Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene and helps to support

the Museum and Archive in the Schweitzer House in Gunsbach in the Alsace,

as well as other medical centres which the Trustees feels are working in the spirit of Schweitzer. In particular, at present, annual donations are sent to the Leper Community at Anandwan in Central India and to the Hopital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti.

STUDENTS

The fund also supports medical students wishing to do their medical elective in the developing world and will consider applications from individual students who, in tune with the ethos of ‘Reverence for Life’ are motivated to engage in voluntary community heath care work.

THE LEGACY

The Fund has taken an active part in the restoration of the hospital buildings which Dr.Schweitzer built between 1924 and 1965 and their conversion into a museum and hostel for visitors – now to become a World Heritage Site – keeping alive the birthplace of the philosophy of Reverence for Life and the way in which Schweitzer put it into practice.

OUTREACH

Since 2002 the Fund supports the outreach work of its sister charity “Reverence for Life UK”, in the dissemination of Schweitzer’s ethical philosophy, particularly to young people and into the public arena.
